JAMES MORRISON AND HIS BIG BAND
With Special Guests Anthony Callea and Sarah McKenzie
Trumpet maestro James Morrison is renowned for his popular annual big band shows, and this year we’re thrilled to announce he’ll be joined on stage by one of Australia’s finest vocalists, Multi Platinum and ARIA Award Winner Anthony Callea, and one of the most exciting and talented jazz singers of recent times, Sarah McKenzie, described as a ‘musical marvel’.
This April, James has been honoured with the privilege to perform for President Obama and the First Lady at the International Jazz Day celebrations at the White House, to play with Aretha Franklin, Sting, Herbie Hancock and Diana Krall... What a star!! Then we’ll be next in line to hear our jazz great perform when he tours with his sensational big band this June.
You’ll be in the mood from the very first note as they bring you big band classics made famous by greats Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Gershwin and of course, Frank Sinatra. What better place to hear these amazing three stars play this timeless music than in the grandeur of Arts Centre Melbourne and Sydney’s State Theatre this June.
Prepare to fall for James’ musical magic, and imagine that superb sound of twice the trumpets and trombones, and three times the saxophones, with incredible vocalists and James trumpeting away in the lead!
Anthony Callea is undoubtedly one of Australia's finest vocalists and performers. The Aria Award winner has undeniably one of this country's most powerful, passionate and pure voices. His debut single The Prayer became Australia's fastest and highest selling single of all time with sales in excess of 4 x platinum and was at the top of the charts for an amazing 5 weeks.
Sarah McKenzie originally hails from Melbourne; she earned a bachelor’s degree in jazz at Perth’s West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and recorded two critically acclaimed albums for the Australian label ABC records – ‘Don’t Tempt Me’ (2010) and ‘Close Your Eyes’ (2012), winner of Best Jazz Album ARIA award. The Australian version of ‘We Could Be Lovers’ has also been awarded with the prestigious Bell Award as Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album 2015. She is rapidly making her mark at jazz’s iconic places around the world - including Paris, London, Monterey and the famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New York.
This simply mouth-watering combination will delight and thrill you with an evening of musical brilliance and sheer talent, as they take you on a journey through many big band standards and toe-tapping favourites.
Don’t miss this rare chance to experience these three musical talents, as they come together for one special show at these stunning venues!
